October is ADHD Awareness Month.
Each year, the number of people diagnosed and treated for ADHD and related conditions increases, which is good news. What continues to be disconcerting is the number of people who are unaware of ADHD and ignore or dispute the existence of this disorder which is “estimated to affect around 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
This year’s theme for ADHD Awareness Month is “Awareness is Key!”
- What is your level of awareness?
- What about your family members, friends, colleagues and service providers?
- How will you act and share facts and bust myths about ADHD?
Educating one person gets us one step closer to acceptance. Individuals and families challenged by ADHD and related conditions fight an uphill battle for acceptance at home, school, in the community and the workplace.
To get started, please read and share the ADHD Awareness Month webpages on ADHD Quick Facts and Myths and Facts About ADHD. Show your support – make time to listen to individuals and families challenged by ADHD/EF and don’t assume that one person’s experience is the same as the next.
Be kind, be inclusive, be accepting of differences and be open to new learning.
